Joachim and Anna

Saints Joachim and Anna, the grandparents of God

(September 9)

Iconographer: Luke Dingman

Saints Joachim and Anna were childless into their old age. This caused them much sorrow and brought them derision from their community.  They prayed fervently for a child and an angel told them God would send them a daughter who would be dedicated to the temple and honored above all women, bearing the Savior while remaining a virgin. They died a few years after Mary’s Presentation in the Temple.  They are considered to be the icon of marriage, and their prayers are sought by those couples who desire children.
