Saint Spyridon

Saint Spyridon

(December 12)

Iconographer: Dmitry Shkolnik

Saint Spyridon, bishop of Tremithus and wonderworker, was born in the third century in Cyprus.  Tradition gives us many examples of his miraculous interventions in healing others and of his life of humility.  He was a defender of the faith at the Third Ecumenical Council. A story is told of his explanation there of the Holy Trinity: he squeezed a brick and instantly fire shot out, water dripped from his hands and then only dust remained. He proclaimed that he had one brick, but it was composed of three elements; likewise, the Holy Trinity is One God but three Persons.
